Missed THE NUTCRACKER Last Christmas?

The Royal Ballet’s spectacular Nutcracker to be streamed

Streaming from Friday 18 February 2022

Due to resource challenges caused by the Omicron COVID-19 variant, performances of The Nutcracker between Tuesday 21 December 2021 and Monday 3 January 2022 (inclusive) were cancelled. Ticket bookers for all affected performances have been contacted by Box Office. 

The Nutcracker has long been one of the most delightful ways to discover the enchantment of ballet and makes for a sparkling festive treat for the whole family. Tchaikovsky’s much-loved music is matched to a story of magic on Christmas Eve, and the journey of Clara and her Nutcracker to the Land of Sweets brings with it some of the most familiar of all ballet moments. 

Peter Wright’s gorgeous production for The Royal Ballet keeps true to the spirit of this Russian ballet classic, and the many solo roles and ensembles show the world-class skills of the Company at its best.

STEPS 2022 – Schweizer Tanzfestival

Ein Frühling mit Tanz in 33 Schweizer Städten und Gemeinden

Ich freue mich schon sehr auf STEPS. Endlich wieder werden viele moderne Choreografien in der Schweiz vorgestellt. Hier die ersten Informationen.

Das zeitgenössische Migros Kulturprozent Tanzfestival Steps findet vom 28. April bis 22. Mai 2022 in allen Landesteile der Schweiz statt. Neun Compagnien bespielen 36 Bühnen – zum ersten mal auch zwei Hotels. Das Festival wird am 28. April 2022 mit der Uraufführung von «Wonderful World», der ersten Zusammenarbeit der Choreografen Kinsun Chan und Martin Zimmermann, in der Lokremise St. Gallen eröffnet.

Bereits für Messa da Requiem und Winterreise hat Christian Spuck erfolgreich Gesang und Tanz auf der Bühne des Opernhaus Zürich vereint – nun bringt der Ballettdirektor abermals das Ballett Zürich mit Vokalsolistinnen und -solisten zusammen. Im Zentrum dieses neuen Ballettabends steht die Musik von Claudio Monteverdi, dem bedeutendsten italienischen Komponisten des frühen 17. Jahrhunderts.

As you all know 2021 has been a tough year for all ballet and dance lovers. Due to covid 19, a lot of live performances had to be cancelled or postponed. But at the end of the year I was lucky that live ballet came back to Zurich.

Neuerscheinung im November 2021

Wie tanzt man Liebe? Kann man auch ohne Musik Ballett tanzen? Wie wird man Prima Ballerina? Wo sind eigentlich die Choreografinnen? Ist das Ballett heute noch zeitgemäss? Fragen über Fragen über die Geheimnisse des Balletts. Bücher über die Geschichte und die Hintergründe des Balletts gibt es nicht so viele. Umso mehr habe ich mich auf das neue Buch der Tanzwissenschaftlerin Dorothee Gelhard gefreut.

Ein ästhetisch wunderschönes, mit viel Liebe illustriertes Buch, in dem die Künstlerin Camille Deschiens jede Kapitelnummer in zarten Farbbilder versteckte.

Christian Spucks erfolgreiche Komödie der Langeweile wird in ganz neuer Besetzung wieder im Dezember am Opernhaus Zürich gespielt. Warum jeder Ballettfan LEONCE und LENA sehen sollte? Die Satire von Georg Büchner auf die Gesellschaft im 19. Jahrhundert ist zeitlos und äusserst unterhaltsam.

Don Quixote: Grosse Wiederaufnahme in Berlin

Flamenco meets Classical Ballet

180 Minuten Tanz, traumhafte Kostüme und fantasievolle Bühnenbilder rund um den „Traumtänzer“ Don QUIXOTE, gespickt mit übersprudelnder Lebensfreude – ergänzt durch spanische Gitarrensoli. Viel Szenenapplaus und Standing Ovations am 3.12.2021 in der Deutschen Oper Berlin.

Mit seiner neuen Choreografie will der Spanier Víctor Ullate mehr Flamenco in das Ballett DON QUIXOTE bringen, aber trotzdem dem bewährten Original des Ballettklassiker Marius Petipa und Alexander A. Gorski treu zu bleiben. Das Staatsballett Berlin will ganz grosses Ballet zeigen. Mit viel Aufwand durch aufwändige Lichttechnik und bezaubernde Bühnenbilder von Roberta Guidi di Bagno wurde die reduzierten Fassung, die bereits 2018 gezeigt wurde, mit allen Finessen ausgestattet.

It’s Nutcracker Season

The Nutcracker is the money making machine for ballet companies

Do you know that about half of the worldwide productions of THE NUTCRACKER will be performed in the United States? It is without question the most popular ballet in the US. For many families it has been a much loved tradition to go to see this beautiful classical ballet with all 3 generations of family just before Christmas.

I read an article last year in The Economist which stated that this ballet can generate up to 45% of a ballet company’s annual revenue in America. So THE NUTCRACKER, as beautiful as it is, is actually a cash cow which is really needed by most of the ballet companies as a reliable stream of income.
