Shooting Star Marcos Morau

World Premiere OUVERTURE for the State Ballet Berlin on 28 th April

I highly recommend to watch Marcos Morau’s Berliner debut OUVERTURE at Staatsoper unter den Linden. Since 2023, the Spanish choreographer has been an Artist-in-Residence with Staatsballett Berlin. „OUVERTURE“ is an allegory about construction and destruction. Isn’t it better to contemplate transformation rather than allowing the world to steer towards an irreversible dreadful fate?

I’ve seen two outstanding choreographies of Marcos Morau: NACHTTRÄUME with Ballet Zurich and SONOMA with La Veronal, Morau’s contemporary dance company based in Barcelona, founded in 2005.

His style is beyond what I’ve seen before – it’s a mesmerizing fusion of dance, Tanztheater and visual arts and music. With innovative movement vocabulary, deep conceptual exploration, and captivating visual aesthetics, Morau’s choreographies are masterpieces of contemporary art. To truly appreciate it, one must experience it firsthand.

Performances OUVERTURE

The new double bill called Overture brings together two exceptional contemporary choreographers, Marcos Morau and Crystal Pite.
Crystal Pite is a Canadian dancer and choreographer Crystal Pite will stage Angels‘ Atlas, one of my favorite choreographies since years.

Awards: Choreographer of the Year 2023

«tanz» magazine’s yearbook 2023 elects Morau on 27 July 2023

First performed in late September 2022 by Ballet Zurich, Morau’s production Nachtträume received particular acclaim. It was commissioned by our new artistic director, Christian Spuck. Emphasising the choreographer’s «fascinating body cascades and frescoes», the critic Bettina Trouwborst writes:

«Marcos Morau galvanises his audiences with surreal pictorial canvases illustrating historical as well as current social crises in a uniquely grotesque fashion. To quote the 40-year-old man himself, it is ‹out of monstrosity and beauty› that he composes an aesthetics that can, on occasion, be shocking in its relentlessness. It is moulded out of dance, music, visual art, literature, film, and photography.»

Between Barcelona and New York, Marcos Morau studied photography, movement and theatre. He builds worlds and imaginary landscapes where movement and image meet and shallow one another. The committee of National Dance Award in Spain appreciated his creative language as part of the heritage, from abstract movement and physical theatre, blended together in a surrealist and dark amalgam. A powerful body language based in the annihilation of any organic logic, dissecting movement and making it into a unique identity.

For over ten years, Marcos runs La Veronal, as director, choreographer, and set, light and costume designer. He’s traveled the world presenting his pieces at festivals, theatres and international contexts, La Veronal was invited several times to Berlin to perform in the Schaubühne Berlin, Hebbel am Ufer and the festival Tanz im August. Apart from his work with his own company, Marcos Morau is an invited artist for various companies and theatres to develop creations. He has collaborated with the Nederlands Dans Theatre, Ballett Zürich, Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon, Göteborgs Operans Danskompani, Grands Ballets Canadiens among many others.

His recent pieces for La Veronal, Sonoma (2020) or Opening Night (2021), reflect human beings of today, before their fears, questioning the world and their destiny.

I danced ballet as child, albeit with little success. Despite this, my passion for ballet and dance has carried into adulthood. I still love to watch ballet performances and would love to share my passion with you.
