There are so many stunning artists
I often wanted to update my post about the TOP contemporary choreographers. But I always got lost because there are so many amazing artists around right now – upcoming or up and coming that I couldn’t decide about the best ones.
I tried to find some criteria – those who are still alive or those who are still played on stage or those who have just started a career as artistic director or whoever…
So I asked ChatGPT to get some help. I am not so happy with that selection. What do you think?
Who are the most popular contemporary choreographers in the 21st century?
There are many contemporary choreographers who have gained popularity and critical acclaim in the 21st century, and it can be difficult to determine the „most popular“ as it is subjective and can vary depending on personal taste and preferences. However, here are some of the most renowned and celebrated contemporary choreographers of the 21st century:
- Crystal Pite – a Canadian choreographer known for her emotionally expressive and intellectually challenging works, and for her collaborations with major dance companies around the world.
- Wayne McGregor – a British choreographer known for his innovative use of technology and science in his works, and for his collaborations with major ballet and contemporary dance companies.
- Akram Khan – a British choreographer known for his fusion of classical Indian kathak dance with contemporary dance, and for his collaborations with musicians and artists from diverse backgrounds.
- Justin Peck – an American choreographer and resident choreographer of the New York City Ballet, known for his energetic and complex neoclassical works.
- Hofesh Shechter – an Israeli choreographer known for his use of percussive movement and high-energy physicality, and for his works that explore themes of violence and society.
Other notable contemporary choreographers of the 21st century include Ohad Naharin, Jiří Kylián, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and Christopher Wheeldon, among many others.
