Who Are The Most Popular Choreographers Today?

Ask ChatGPT about contemporary ballet

I started googling about this topic months ago but couldn’t decide. There are so many amazing young and upcoming choreographers around. So I asked ChatGPT to help me.

What do you think of this list? Who is missing?

ChatGPT replied:

As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, several emerging choreographers were gaining recognition in the world of dance and ballet. However, please keep in mind that the landscape of choreography is continually evolving, and new talents may have emerged since then. Here are a few choreographers who were notable at that time:

  1. Crystal Pite: Known for her innovative and emotionally charged contemporary choreography.
  2. Alexei Ratmansky: Celebrated for his ability to combine classical ballet with modern influences.
  3. Justin Peck: Gaining recognition for his fresh and dynamic choreography, often collaborating with the New York City Ballet.
  4. Wayne McGregor: Known for his cutting-edge and experimental choreography.
  5. Akram Khan: Blending contemporary dance with elements of Indian classical dance, creating unique and powerful works.
  6. Kyle Abraham: Renowned for his emotionally charged and socially conscious choreography.
  7. Hofesh Shechter: Recognized for his distinctive blend of contemporary dance and music.
  8. Cathy Marston: Known for her narrative-driven choreography often inspired by literature and history.
  9. Benjamin Millepied: Gained recognition for his work with the Paris Opera Ballet and his contemporary choreography.
  10. Twyla Tharp: A legendary choreographer who continues to create innovative works.

Please note that the choreographers listed above were known for their work as of 2021, and there may have been new talents and rising stars in the field of choreography since then. To discover the most current and upcoming choreographers, I recommend following dance publications, attending contemporary dance festivals, and keeping an eye on the programming of prominent dance companies and theaters.

Depending where you live you have seen great choreographies at your place. I would add at least William Forsythe, Ohad Nahrain, Pina Bausch, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Marcos Morau, Christian Spuck, Edward Clug and David Dawson.

Probably it makes sense to categorized choreographers by generation or young talents to get better results. And what about female choreographers?

I danced ballet as child, albeit with little success. Despite this, my passion for ballet and dance has carried into adulthood. I still love to watch ballet performances and would love to share my passion with you.
