Degas Ballerina re-created in Valentino for 15.000 Dollars

Harper’s Bazaar just did an amazing photo-shoot with rising star Misty Copeland, the first African American Female Principal Dancer with A.B.T., channeling the famous Degas ballerinas in Designer dresses of Valentino, Roberto Cavalli and Alexander McQueen.

Why are Degas paintings still popular today?

I love the paintings of Degas, as his works transport us into the inner sanctum of the ballerina. As observers within the Paris rehearsal rooms, we see the dancers as they really are – authentic, hard working and totally focussed on their bodies and their movement. The smallest details reveal themselves within the paintings – the rustle of a skirt, the quiet word of the ballet master to correct a movement or the preparing for an arabesque.
It’s a world away from the performance stage where the dancers appear perfect and totally in control.

Review: Ratmansky‘s Reconstruction of Swan Lake – Better? Different?

Opening night at the Opera Zurich on 6. February 2016

As much as I like the performance of the Zurich Ballet, ballet lovers may be confused by the steps and dancing. In the old days, ballet had different standards as we are now used to. It was all about conveying a story – meaning a lot of acting, and less jumps and footwork. Even the most famous of arm movements were not shown. I really missed seeing these beautiful swan-like movements.

Ratmansky’s swans however are more like girls. Odette plays the part of a young lady who falls in love, and is shocked after her lovers betrayal. I must say, I like this performance a lot – stunning setting, awesome costumes, great pantomime, brilliant principal dancers, perfect corps de ballet, however I still prefer the quality of dance that we have today.

Schwanensee im Original: Früher war alles anders

Schwanensee rekonstruiert von Alexei Ratmansky für das Ballett Zürich

Das Zürcher Ballett zeigt die Originalversion von Schwanensee, die der Star-Choreograf Alexei Ratmansky in mühevoller Kleinarbeit rekonstruiert hat. Schwanensee wird in der Erstfassung von Marius Petipa und Lew Iwanow aus dem Jahr 1895 aufgeführt.

Meine Empfehlung: SEHENSWERT!
Wer aber einen klassischen Schwanensee auf höchstem technischen Niveau mit Schwanenarmen und Querspagat erwartet, wird enttäuscht werden. Die Originalfassung basiert auf Gestik, die Tanzbewegungen sind reduziert, dafür gibt es wunderbare Massenszenen mit tollen Kostümen, Fantasie und Emotionen.

Woyzek und Ballett, wie geht das zusammen? Sperrig, verzweifelt, schlaff nach vorn fallende Schultern, mit jedem Schritt seiner eigenen Trostlosigkeit und schliesslich dem finalen Schritt zum Mord näherkommend, so läuft Georg Büchners Woyzek seit Jahrzehnten über die Theaterbühnen.

Als Tänzer in einem Ballett, eine irgendwie abwegige bis schwierige Vorstellung. Aber gerade solche Nicht-Ballett-kompatible Figuren reizen ganz offensichtlich den Direktor des Balletts Zürich Christian Spuck. Für ihn nach eigener Aussage eine verlockende Herausforderung. Obwohl schon 2011 mit dem Nasjona Balletten, Den Norske Opera & Ballett, Oslo uraufgeführt, hat er die Choreografie in einigen Details neu strukturiert und eine durchaus eigenständige Zürcher Fassung erarbeitet.

Jede Theaterinszenierung von Büchners Dramen-Fragment ist eine kreative, rekonstruierende Herausforderung. Weniges ist von Büchner schlüssig zu Ende formuliert. Er hat ein Text-Konvolut als einen literarischen Steinbruch hinterlassen. Nichts weniger als dieses Textmaterial zum Tanzen zu bringen, aus Büchners Sätzen starke Konkretionen zu extrahieren und narrative Bilder zu…

Polina Semionova tanzt 2016 zehnmal in Berlin

Freuen Sie sich auf Polina Semionova: Nachdem die Ausnahmeballerina bereits in der vergangenen Spielzeit durch den Intendanten Nacho Duato für elf Vorstellungen als Gast zurück an das Staatsballett Berlin geholt wurde, wird diese besondere Zusammenarbeit in der Spielzeit 2015/2016 weiter vertieft. Polina Semionova wird in insgesamt 14 Vorstellungen gemeinsam mit den Solisten und dem Corps de ballet des Staatsballetts Berlin in der Deutschen Oper Berlin, der Staatsoper im Schiller Theater und der Komischen Oper Berlin auftreten. Ein besonderer Höhepunkt wird im April 2016 ihr Debüt in Nacho Duatos „White Darkness“ als Teil des Programms „Duato | Kylián“ sein. Des Weiteren ist sie in Duatos „Vielfältigkeit. Formen von Stille und Leere“ und seinem „Dornröschen“ zu sehen wie auch in den weiteren beliebten Repertoire-Werken „Onegin“, „Schwanensee“, „Giselle “ und „Romeo und Julia“.

Polina Semionova will star in a total of 14 performances alongside the soloists and the corps de ballet of the Staatsballett Berlin at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Staatsoper im Schiller Theater and the Komische Oper Berlin. A special highlight will be her debut in Nacho Duato’s „White Darkness“ in April 2016 as part of the „Duato | Kylián“ program. Furthermore, she will perform in Duato’s „Multiplicity. Forms of Silence and Emptiness“ and his “Sleeping Beauty” as well as in the popular repertory productions of “Onegin”, “Swan Lake”, “Giselle” and “Romeo and Juliet”.
