A Beach in a Box – Opera Performance at Theater Spektakel

SUN & SEA by RUGILĖ BARZDŽIUKAITĖ, VAIVA GRAINYTĖ & LINA LAPELYTĖ

What is happening at the beach? Listen to holidaymakers singing about their experiences and their lives.

From a gallery the audience watches holiday-makers below, kids building sandcastles, tourists sunning, entertaining, drinking and eating. That can happen on every beach everywhere. But then an opera singer starts to sing.

There are different characters as the „Wealthy Mommy“ who sings of her holidays all over the world:
My boy is eight and a half
And he’s already been swimming in The Black, The Yellow, The White, The Red, The Mediterranean, Aegean seas…….

The „Philosopher’s commentary“ critizes globalization and world trade:
The banana comes into being, ripens somewhere in South America, And then it ends up on the other side of the planet… It only existed to satisfy our hunger in one bite, To give us the feeling of bliss.

In the Song of complaint we hear all opera singers talking about climate change:
…The beginning of May brought frost and snow And winter gives us buds and mushrooms…

Golden Lion Award

Sun & Sea is the second joint work of director Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė, composer Lina Lapelytė and librettist Vaiva Grainytė. Autor: ballettlovers

I danced ballet as child, albeit with little success. Despite this, my passion for ballet and dance has carried into adulthood. I still love to watch ballet performances and would love to share my passion with you.
